I am compelled to dedicate this week's newsletter to reflect and celebrate President Biden's 50-year career and unwavering commitment to education, especially during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. During my tenure as Chief Academic Officer with the Portland Public Schools, President Biden's advocacy and support during the height of the pandemic and school closures were instrumental in allowing us to continue offering educational services during its closure. As Superintendent, I was able to reopen the Coachella Valley Unified School District and provide essential services to our students, staff, and community. The American Rescue Plan's historic $130 billion investment in our schools, including $122 billion through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ARP ESSER), was a game-changer.

This funding enabled the Coachella Valley Unified School District to implement crucial measures to address our students' academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. Thanks to these resources, we significantly enhanced our mental health and wellness services, which aligns perfectly with President Biden's commitment to prioritizing the physical and psychological well-being of students, as evidenced by the $1 billion discretionary request to increase the number of mental health professionals in schools, particularly in high-poverty areas.
Furthermore, the funding enabled us to address critical community needs. We partnered with community agencies to offer vaccinations to students and staff, improve our school infrastructure, and invest in measures to ensure the safe operation of our schools. The emphasis on wrap-around services was incredibly beneficial, allowing us to provide comprehensive support to our students and their families.
What truly sets President Biden apart is his understanding that more than addressing the immediate impact of the pandemic is needed. His Build Back Better Agenda directly tackles longstanding educational inequities, aiming to revitalize our education system and ensure every student can learn and prepare for the jobs of tomorrow. I am particularly moved by the President's commitment to advancing educational equity for every child.

The proposed $20 billion investment in Title I schools, the establishment of universal preschool for all three- and four-year-olds, and the efforts to make high-quality childcare affordable and accessible are game-changers for millions of American families. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the challenges educators face, I am grateful for President Biden's recognition of the teacher shortage crisis and his plans to invest in teacher preparation, strengthen pipelines for underrepresented teachers, and support current teachers.
These initiatives will have a lasting positive impact on our education system and the students it serves. President Biden's commitment to addressing infrastructure inequalities in schools, increasing support for children with disabilities, and prioritizing students' physical and mental well-being demonstrates a holistic approach to education that is both refreshing and necessary.

As we honor President Joe Biden doe his service, it is equally important to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden. As a career educator, Dr. Biden has been a steadfast advocate for the education agenda, working tirelessly to support and enhance the educational experiences of all Americans. During her first two years as First Lady, Dr. Biden traveled to over 40 states and territories, over 100 cities, and 10 other countries.
She has consistently championed the causes that have defined her public life: supporting military families, advocating for increased educational opportunities, and working to end cancer as we know it. Her efforts to safely reopen schools after the pandemic’s shutdown, support the President’s economic agenda, and urge adults and children to protect themselves and their communities by getting vaccinated against COVID-19 have been instrumental. Dr. Biden's dedication and tireless work have helped bring our country together and foster a sense of unity and purpose.
Joe Biden's decision not to seek reelection, coupled with his steadfast commitment to education, paints a picture of a leader genuinely dedicated to the betterment of our nation. His willingness to put the country's needs above his ambitions sets a powerful example for future leaders. As we move forward, Biden's legacy will be defined not just by his accomplishments in office but by this final, selfless act that puts the future of American democracy and education first.
In a political landscape often marred by division and self-interest, Biden's decision is a powerful reminder of what authentic leadership, patriotism, and commitment to education look like. I am profoundly grateful for this, and I believe the impact of his dedication to education will be felt for generations to come.
